What is Dictation, and Why Should We Do It?

Dictation helps children learn correct spelling and punctuation.

Dictation is the practice of reading a passage aloud to children while they transcribe it as accurately as possible onto their own sheets of paper. This practice was popularized in the homeschool movement by educators like Ruth Beechik and Charlotte Mason. In Brave Writer, dictation practice replaces traditional workbooks for spelling, punctuation, and grammar instruction.

These programs offer practical suggestions that enable parents and educators to maximize the value of dictation for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and literary devices.

Growing Brave Writers offers detailed instructions about the practices of copywork and dictation.
